Nice Caribbean food. Fast and friendly service. I usually pick up the doos there and eat at home. There are seats available if you want to eat there.
Food: 5/5 Service via UE: 5/5 Everytime I visit Queens, I make it a point to visit Singh's to get some good, authentic Trini food. From what I recall, pre-Covid Singh's was a lively restaurant where soca played through the speakers, a variety of Islanders would be liming and enjoying the vibes, and there was trini food and snacks galore. From Trini Chinese fried chicken, to doubles, to pone, chubby, shandy, and everything else that you'd want to enjoy. Since my first visit, I've remained loyal to Singh's. My last visit this past weekend, I didn't have the time to get over to their location, so instead I ordered on UberEats, grimacing at the $6.99 delivery fee. I placed my order at 6:30 a.m., since they open at 6 a.m. and received my order within an hour, delivered by a very polite young man. The food was packed very well - there was no spillage which I was expecting from the curry. I ordered pholourie (which came with TWO tasty tamarind sauces), 2 doubles, and one boneless chicken dhal puri roti. Everything tasted just like I remembered it to be. I packed some to take back with me to COS to extend the pleasure of the meal. Still, there was minimal spillage of the curry throughout my flights, so that was a huge win. Singh's thank you for your authentic Trini cuisine. I look forward to visiting your establishment when I next return.
Okay, so I had been meaning to come to Singh's for years, but had stayed loyal to other places I'd always gone. I decided to finally try something different. I must say Singh's surprised me. And while I didn't try too much beyond doubles and a few pastries this time, I will be back to expand my menu experience. The restaurant is spacious with lots of room and a great setup for people to order yet not getting in the way of people dining in and there's a nice vibe with the bar tucked in the back corner when you first come in. Good music playing immediately me want to hang for a little bit. I perused the front to see all of the things available, and there was EVERYTHING from doubles, roti, curry, all types of meat options, pastries, other desserts, juices, breads. All of it looked really good. And judging by the constant flow of customers, others did also. I ordered 8 or 9 doubles, devouring one before I even left the restaurant. 4 stars this time... with the ability to give a better assessment when I taste more next time.
The aloo pie slayed. Gagged me. It was crispy when biting into it and then you get the doughy dough and then the FILLING. UGH. GAGGED !! And that pepper sauce YES. The double was so good too like fr I could dog 40 of these. The ladies were nice but not too nice so that's how you know the foods gonna be good. Iykyk I was on the phone with my Guyanese bestie and we were turning up on FaceTime when I walked in. Music was a little loud and I'm a bit hard of hearing but it wasn't crazy. I loved the vibes.
Came here last night for a quick double run since I was picking up my friend from the airport and I was glad they opened late as I came during MLK around 8pm. The place was relatively packed. Of course I was dreading the wait but surprisingly the line moved pretty fast. I placed two double order to go with everything on it. The lady whipped it up pretty fast so I was glad I didn't have to wait long. Once in my car, I went at it and I have to say, it was okay. I had better where the chick peas were nuttier and more creamy. This was was a bit more runny and flavor was on a bit weak. Regardless, I still enjoyed it and so did the person I picked up from the airport. Would I go here again, the answer is yes because I wouldn't mind trying other stuff on their menu.
***A MUST VISIT RESTAURANT IN THIS AREA*** ***FUN TO EXPERIENCE*** A SPECIAL PART OF QUEENS Spanning about 30 blocks around Liberty Ave in Richmond Hill, is a very interesting neighborhood known as Little Guyana. A place where one of the largest populations of Guyanese immigrants reside in New York, along with others hailing from Trinidad, India, and Asia. As such, it's a bustling Indo-Carribean mixing pot neighborhood with a Times Square vibe. And most importantly, it's also home to multiple roti shops, bakeries specializing in Caribbean fare, ethnic clothing shops, west Indian style grocery stores, and even Guyanese style Chinese food restaurants (Yes, that really is a thing!) EXPERIENCE LITTLE GUYANA AT SINGH'S So, a fantastic way to start off your exploration of Little Guyana is at Singh's Roti Shop & Bar. Here, the Trinidadian owners have for over 30 years, offered steam tables filled with diverse Caribbean flavors, fresh made roti, doubles, Caribbean style Chinese, and a large assortment of authentic desserts that remind many locals of their favorite childhood sweets. YOU HAVE TO ORDER SOME... When visiting Singh's, you have to order some doubles, a delightful, super popular Trinidad street food. The doubles are made with two pieces of flat fried dough (Baras) , and then curried chickpeas (Channa) and various chutneys and condiments are sandwiched in between the two baras to create a kind of Caribbean sloppy joe sandwich. Now this may sound a little weird at first, but let me tell you, if you have never tried a double, you are in for an absolute treat. And if you enjoy spicy, make sure order them "with everything and spicy"..... You can thank me later. ANOTHER MUST TRY IS... Hell, with a name like Singh's ROTI Shop, you'd have to be crazy not to order one of their freshly made signature Indo-Caribbean flatbreads. They offer regular roti, and also Paratha roti, which resembles a roti that has been "beat up" a little bit (and is affectionately called "Buss Up Shut" by those in-the-know). Then there is the Dhal Puri roti which is stuffed with ground split peas. And if you're wondering what to do with this big roti flatbread - well, the answer is - it's normally eaten with one of the various delicious curry dishes offered in the steam tables. You can choose from shrimp, goat, chicken, beef, and duck curries, just to name a few. And you can also add in curried Channa or potatoes in the dish along with the protein. And then, you dip your roti into the curry, and/or make little sandwiches with it. In addition, you can also have the roti filled with something, such as curry chicken or channa, and then rolled up to make a Caribbean style burrito. And last but not least, they even make what's called a "pepper roti", which has chopped spicy peppers and cheese sandwiched between two roti, which is then grilled, to make a kind of spicy Caribbean pizza. SO MANY CHOICES In addition to the above mentioned items, Singh's also serves Trinidad style jerk chicken and jerk pork, BBQ chicken, ox tail, and Caribbean style Chinese dishes like lomein, fried rice, fried chicken, and a really tasty Chinese roast pork. And to to finish your meal with something sweet, Singh's has a very large selection of Caribbean style deserts, such as coconut drops, currant rolls, plourie, sugar cake, and fudge, just to name a few. Now with so many delicious options here, why only a four star rating? Well I have to mention that just a few of the Caribbean style Chinese dishes such as the lomein and fried rice are not the best I've tasted. But this is only in comparison with a dynamite place like Sybil's Bakery And Restaurant (Look for my review of that restaurant soon). IT'S AN EXPERIENCE So why do I reccomend Singh's as a must try when visiting Little Guyana? Well, it's the overall experience that pushes this establishment to the top of the list. Such as the festive atmosphere when you walk in, with flashing lights decorating the perimeter, and Caribbean music pulsing, along with individuals enjoying drinks at the flashy bar to the side of the restaurant (Take a look at the video posted with my pictures as an example.) And although most choose to take-out from here, there are quite a few tables available to sit and enjoy your Caribbean treats while taking in the scenery - which is a luxury not afforded in many other restaurants in the area. So really, what I'm trying to convey here, is that every time I visit Singh's, I'm overcome with a feeling of happiness that comes from the overall experience. And so, I would say that it's a great bet that you will feel this way too, so please give Singh's a try.
As I understand it, many of the South Asian communities in the Caribbean originally hail from Bihar, so I was not surprised to see the eggplant mash at this Trinidadian restaurant advertised as "chokha." (Sadly there was no litti to pair it with). But the dhal puri was a perfect vessel for the sabzis. The bread was flakey and soft, and the cumin-spiced dhal mash on the bread gave it enough flavor to even eat by itself. Of course, I can also never say to doubles, and those were delicious here. My favorite item was something I had never tried called saheena, a lentil fritter which they offered to put some tamarind sauce on for us. I was worried it would be a bit dry, but the whole item was wonderfully moist and flavorful.
